Disappointed- The Four Letter Word

Image found at The Pink Papers

I sit and wait for him. He sounded so unhappy when we'd talked earlier. I know I'm really in for it now. My feet shift as my mind drifts to what's to come. I hear him come through the front door. Minutes seem like hours before he finally enters the room.

He sits beside me and takes my hand in his. When he speaks his voice is low and controlled. "What were you thinking texting while driving? You could have really hurt someone or harmed yourself."

"It was just a fender bender. Noone got hurt," I half-heartedly say.

He holds my hand tighter and looks into my eyes. "I couldn't bear the thought of something happening to you," he says softly.

"I'm so sorry and I hate that I've made you mad at me."

"I'm not mad," he sighs, "I'm disappointed in you."

Those words cut like a knife through my heart. A lump grows in my throat as tears fall silently down my cheeks. There is no worse thing that he could possibly say. Be mad at me. Scold me. Punish me. But the disappointment, I cannot take.

Lea,

I am so glad that you are safe and unhurt.

I wish I had the words to soothe your pain. You are a sweet and lovely young lady.

-->"I'm disappointed in you."

Oh yikes! The four worst words in the English language! Gawd I hate to hear that sentence (thank god it's not often!) .. just like you said.. hearing that is way worse than any punishment!

Glad you are ok! Glad nobody else was hurt as well!

Lesson learned I'm sure!

Hello everyone, thank you for your comments. I apparently wasn't very clear in tagging this post. This was actually not a real life situation. It is a story of fiction mixed with my thoughts and feelings about disappointment. I'm not very good at writing in third person so wrote it from my perspective. I am totally okay, thanks for your concern. :-)

Ya know... I kinda figured that! LOL

But I read the other comments before I posted and thought.. hmmm.. maybe I read that wrong and it was real!

Glad it wasn't real.. but still understand the sentiment for sure!

I thought it was real too, until I read the labels. That's a lovely little vignette.

What happens next?

Hugs,

Yes. It's the disappointment that does it every time.

Very nice. :)

Glad to know you weren't actually texting and driving! I knew someone who was killed in a car accident because the driver of the other vehicle was doing just that. The "texter" walked away without a scratch.

I agree - disappointment is the worst punishment of all. You captured it perfectly! Love your writing!

@Zelle, "I'm disappointed in you" is only rivaled by "We need to talk" in heart sinking feelings, for me.

@ronnie, Thank you!

@Hermione, I imagine I'd still get a severe punishment, but it would still be those words that hurt most of all.

@sarah thorne, Thanks!

@Season, That's terrible, I'm very sorry to hear that. It's definitely more dangerous than some imagine.

And who was it that said ... "sticks and stones may break my bones.. but words will never hurt me"?? -- BULL-HOCKEY!

We're well aware of how much "THOSE" words can hurt!
