New York

I want to head East again. My last vacation away in April feels like SO long ago. This last week, a friend announced that she was granted a job transfer to NYC that she'd been wanting for a while and will be moving there next month. I'm really excited for her. A bit jealous even. Though I couldn't even afford the rental space for a cardboard box to live in out there. Lol. Having a job and money is kind of key to moving, whether it's a few blocks away or across the country. I'm a realist.

I'm not much of a baseball fan.

I'd be perpetually lost in the subway system.

I'm not big on the outdoors.

It's crowded and expensive.

But it sure is fun to look at and visit.

And I think I have the attitude to fit in.

Even Peeps love NYC!

And then there's one of the city's highlights, SCONY, where all my friends hang out.

I miss you all! October can't come soon enough!

"New York" cover by Cat Power
Start spreading the news I'm leaving today I want to be a part of it New York, New York  These vagabond shoes Are longing to stray Right through the very heart of it New York, New York I wanna wake up in a city That doesn't sleep And find I'm king of the hill Top of the heap These little town blues Are melting a way  I'll make a brand-new start of it In old New York If I can make it there I'll make it anywhere It's up to you New York, New York New York, New York I want to wake up In a city that never sleeps And find I'm a number one, top of the list King of the hill, a number one These little town blues  Are melting a way I'm gonna make a brand-new start of it In old New York And... if I can make it there I'm gonna make it anywhere It's up to you New York, New York

(All pictures with exception of the Peeps car taken by yours truly. And once again, Blogger's preview is not showing the post like I spaced it out to look. Grr..)

Lea,

We miss you Lea. And I agree that October cannot come soon enough.

Big Hug,

This made me very homesick. I lived in NYC for many years. And everything you said is true. I made more money there than I ever made in my life and I could afford about half a cardboard box. I also lived upstate where SCONY's held. So beautiful.

I still miss NYC. I loved living in it, so would you. And it would love you too. If you love it, it loves you back like nothing else. So when you visit, let it love you. It will always remember you, every time you go back.

What is it with us Sconyites waxing nostalgic these days? I am in the midst of planning a trip back to Chicago. I feel such a visceral pull. I must go there. I can't explain it. Yesterday, I was looking for places to stay. I'm tossed up between staying in the neighborhood where a friend lives or staying in my old neighborhood (on the same street, even). When I tried to picture what that would be like, I burst into tears.

I'm with you. October can't come soon enough. I will be very happy to see you. Our time on the mountain is too short & the time that passes between our time there is much too long.

I honestly believe that the, umm...desire to share experiences with our fellow SCONY-ites in New York City that you and I share, i.e. resentment, jealously, envy, etc., is by now recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Psychiatric Disorders [DSM-IV]. And now you take me over the edge with one of my favorite geographical songs recorded by 'Old Blue Eyes' before your birth!

So here's the plan lea: No doubt there are others who suffer from this condition as well. I can think of more than a few across the country. So, based on Emen's intoxicating description of the Big Apple [with little Peeps...how cute!] and financial statistics, I suggest that we invite about 10 like-minded, obsessive-compulsive New York City day dreamers, acquire an empty refrigerator box [or 2] and select a location on 13th Street, somewhere between 6th and 7th Avenues, where we will be guaranteed at least a monthly embrace by the City.

And don't worry about crowded conditions inside our cardboard box, we won't have enough money to eat!

We miss you, Lea! We'll drink a toast to you at the August SCONY party. October will be here before you know it! Unfortunately, it will be over in the blink of an eye. The Mountain Weekends seem to fly.

BOL at the Peeps pic!!! Ah...that is a NYC I have never seen.

I, too, love NYC. The subway really isn't that hard to learn. Bus routes are a bit harder, though. And, yeah, expensive, expensive, expensive. But if only...

If you ever make it to the big city, wave hi to it for me.

@joey, When it gets below 60 days to go, I'll put the countdown clock back up. *hug*

@Emen, I didn't know you were from there. It seems that anyone who has stayed there for a certain time period always feels a pull back.

@Regan, I hope you have a good time in Chicago! I'm not even from NYC but you people just make me want to keep coming back!

@Eileen, Ha, I will work on finding 8 more people. ;-) I'm going to have to look up the Frank Sinatra version of that song.

@Marne, The weekends do go much too fast! Why is it time flies when you're having fun but goes sloooow when you're at work? Not fair!

@Ana, I'm quite directionally challenged so it'd be hard for me. Lol. But I suppose if you were only regularly taking the same few routes you'd get the hang of it.

@eileen, I just looked up the Frank Sinatra version and duh, of course I've heard it! Cat Power's version sounds so different I didn't even relate that it was a cover of the same song. I like both of them.

Enjoyed your pics and what you had to say. I've been to visit one time. There is no other city like it.

Lea said...

@ronnie, I highly recommend it!

@SNP, It is a unique place. Of course, it's the people that make all the difference and I'm lucky to know some good ones.

NYC is, in one word, CRAZY. Lol, I live fairly close to there and i've noticed I take advantage of the fact that I can so easily visit. It can be fun, lovely, amazing, and downright crazy and insane all at once!

@playful little brat, If I ever were to head East, I think I'd pick PA or somewhere that I could get into the city with a reasonable drive, but not have to live IN the city.

@lea

I'm so pleased you enjoyed the iconic 1979 rendition by Frank Sinatra. Perhaps you can squeeze it into your IPod, along with the original recording by Liza Minnelli, for our 'down time' in the cardboard box.

Lea said...

@eileen, I'll work on it. And also look into a wireless charging station as I assume the box will not have any outlets. ;-)

@sarah, I wish I could! I hear it's really cool to visit near Christmas and I know just the guy who LOVES Christmas and would probably show me around. October is the plan for now though!
